Smart Sync is effectively useless, and I just found that there is still "Selective Sync" in the settings, so I'll have to use that - which makes the entire Dropbox app to browse my Dropbox basically 99.9% useless, because I'm sure it stupidly will pretend anything I chose not to sync doesn't even exist at all. This is really really atrocious software, and I can't believe I'm paying for this. There couldn't be a simple view / option of looking at the Smart Sync queue? Or even a retroactive list of files (and their folders) recently downloaded? ("Recent" doesn't show anything, and even the "View Sync Issues" log is empty, despite some notifications flagging errors as I try to rush ahead of Dumb Sync to cancel it's dumbness.) Wait, what? making a top-level folder to be "Online Only" doesn't affect the subfolders, and the actual icons on the Dropbox app don't matter or lag in changing to reflect what is actually smart sync'ing? What can I do about it? See a short blip of a notification that says the file name (generic media files from a camera) and try to guess which folder Dropbox randomly picked, and rush to change the setting to "Online Only".
but starting this week, it just started to fill up my hard drive, randomly picking folders I haven't touched at all recently, and downloading tens of thousands of files / gigabytes of data to create a local copy.
On my new computer, Dropbox tries to be smart, and I let "Smart Sync" do its thing for a few months because it didn't try to download everything.
I have over a decade of files on Dropbox, and with past versions of the software, I used Selective Sync to keep entire swaths of my Dropbox online only as cloud storage and archives, only needing a few folders to actually sync.
